FAQ

Why do you emphasize in your instructions that the door closers be properly adjusted?

School Safe is designed to operate best when the door closes at the proper closing rate. Repeated slamming of the door can prematurely shorten the useful life of School Safe.

Why do you emphasize in your instructions that you should wait about 12 hours before continual use of School Safe?

School Safe attaches with a special Very High Bond double sided tape that reaches it maximum strength after curing for about 12 hours.

Why do you emphasize in your instructions that School Safe should be installed no more than 5 feet above the floor?

While testing School Safe we found that if it is installed more than 5 feet above the floor, premature latching can occur because some doors are warped so badly.

Why is it important that all building staff be trained on the use of School Safe?

Using School Safe properly and consistently involves a change of habits. School Safe can only assist in saving lives if it is used consistently and becomes a habit. Lockdown drills should be practiced regularly using School Safe. There should be procedures in place to instruct all staff at the beginning of each school year. Custodians, food service and teacher assistants should be included in the training.

Does School Safe have a feature that keeps the door shut and locked when the door glass is breached and the Active Shooter reaches in and unlocks the door?

No it does not. Building and fire code would not allow that. Building and fire code says that you have to be able to unlock a room door with just one motion (ie pulling the handle down). That is why you cannot have dead bolts or thumb screw locks unless they are tied together with the handle so that when you pull the handle down it also unlocks the dead bolt.

School Safe just allows you to keep your door locked all day long while still allowing students and staff to go in and out without restrictions. The School Safe keeps the door from latching. In the event of a lockdown emergency, you flip the School Safe lever down and it allows the locked door to latch thereby locking the classroom. No keys are needed.

Is School Safe approved through the building inspector?

Yes and no. When we were designing and developing School Safe one of the first places we visited was the building department of the city we were living in. We showed them School Safe and explained the process of how it is used. They did not find and issues with School Safe and how it is used. School Safe has been on the market for more than four years and is in schools in 47 states, Canada and Mexico and we have not yet had any building department voice objections to it. However, we have also that building departments are quite autonomous and each city and county have their own requirements and interpretations of code.

Does School Safe have fire department approval?

Yes and no. When we were designing and developing School Safe one of the first places we visited was the fire department of the city we were living in. We showed them School Safe and explained the process of how it is used. They did not find and issues with School Safe and how it is used. Additionally, they made a recommendation to us to add a label that would go on the jamb right next to the School Safe (which we include now with each School Safe purchased) to instruct user on the correct ‘Normal’ position for School Safe and the correct position in the event of a fire or lockdown. We also went to the state fire marshal’s office to show them School Safe and to get their opinion. He liked its use and decided to take it to a state meeting he was going to. School Safe has been on the market for more than eight years and is in schools in 47 states and in that time we have only had two cases where the local fire marshal had some objection. Fire departments, like building departments are also quite autonomous and each jurisdiction has their own requirements and interpretations of code. Our video actually has School Safe being endorsed by a battalion chief.

Could a child accidently lock themselves in the classroom??

No. To begin with, School Safe is not a latching or locking device. It only prevents the door from automatically latching when it closes. School Safe does not affect the operation of the lockset in any way.

Should the lever be pulled down while the teacher was absent from the room, the door would be locked from the outside, but the children would just have to use the door handle to exit the room as usual. All classroom doors must have locksets that unlock the door from the inside in one motion to allow easy exiting.

Could a student lock the teacher out of the room by pulling the School Safe lever down?

Yes, but a key will get them back in. We advise schools that pulling the lever down to lock the teacher out should be treated like falsely pulling a fire alarm. If students are told ahead of time that School Safe is there to protect their lives, the vast majority of them will leave them alone and report students that misuse them.

How does School Safe work?

The function of School Safe is to allow the door lockset to be kept in the locked position all day long, but because School Safe prevents the door from latching, it can be used for entering and exiting all day long without even having to use the handle. In the event of an emergency, pull the School Safe lever down and the door can them close all the way and latch, and because the door has been locked all day there is no need to find keys to lock the door.

Will School Safe work on ‘double doors’?

Yes and no. In order for School Safe to work on double doors, the doors must have a center mullion.

Will School Safe work on doors without closers?

Yes and no.  They will work on doors without closers but there more of a chance that the doors will slam repeatedly which can prematurely damage School Safe.

Will School Safe work on exterior doors?

Yes.
